Let’s build community! How do we accomplish this in our digital world? By building relationships! I believe that business relationships must be built on trust and openness. With that in mind, it’s time to continue the “Who is Liz?” series! I created this series to help you get to know me.
So…let’s build community and get to know each other! If you missed part one of this series, you can read it here!
What is my favorite color?
My favorite color is green because it reminds me of freshness, new life, and growth.
Peeking up through the soil of my landscaping are tiny, green daffodil sprouts. Their beginning is barely visible and not very pretty. However, soon these little green blades will begin to grow taller, eventually developing crisp green stems to complement the grass-like blades. These stems are the start of something new for the plant, and from this newness comes stunning yellow and white daffodils. However, without the green, there wouldn’t be any beautiful flowers for us to admire.
Our life can follow this same pattern. We are like daffodils waiting to grow and be transformed.
Without the struggle to push our way through the soil of life and its problems, we cannot emerge into the open field as tiny green sprouts ready to be transformed and, in turn, transform the world.
If we remain covered in soil and don’t allow our green heads to poke through the dirt, we’ll never find the sun. Then we’ll remain stuck in that position forever, unable to grow and wow the world with our beauty and newness. It is from that freshness of life that we are able to inspire each other to grow personally and professionally.
What do I do if I get writer’s block?
Staring at a blank screen with what seems like a blank brain can be frustrating. This is especially so when you have a deadline quickly approaching and can’t think of the right words. When this happens to me, I know that it is time to take a break. This break doesn’t have to be long. Even a five-minute break can be helpful.
I think writer’s block is my brain’s way of telling me to rest and reset. It’s saying to me, “Hey! I’m overworked and overtired! Let me rest!” So, to counteract this tiredness, here are some of my favorite brain breaks:
- Take a quick walk around my neighborhood.
- Drink two big glasses of water to rehydrate and allow my brain to function the way it should be functioning.
- Move a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer (which had probably been sitting in the washer for hours if I’m being really honest).
- Turn on worship music and just relax in the moment.
- Grab a quick, protein-filled snack to refuel my brain.
- Step outside on my lanai and soak up the beautiful sunshine.
After these little breaks, it’s like I’ve pushed a reset button on my brain. The words begin to flow once again. Writer’s block is no longer blocking me! My brain is rested and happy!
What was my favorite college class?
Bowling, err…maybe not! Well, bowling was definitely an easy, fun class to satisfy my P.E. credit. However, it wasn’t my favorite class.
My favorite class was so enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring that I took seven semesters of it! What subject could be so enjoyable that I would use seven of my classes on one topic? Greek! Probably not the subject you were expecting me to say, right?
Over seven semesters, I earned 21 credits learning Koine Greek, also known as Biblical Greek. From the 4th century BC until mid-6th century AD, Koine Greek was the common tongue of the Roman Empire. It was also used to write the New Testament and translate the original Hebrew Old Testament into Greek, which was known as the Septuagint.
Koine Greek is a beautiful language. While it can be hard to learn the many rules, tenses, voices, moods, and inflections of Koine Greek, it is actually similar in a lot of ways to the English language. Due to my strong foundation in English grammar, I was better equipped to understand the various nuances of the Greek language.
Speaking of grammar, did I enjoy grammar class in school?
Yes! I have always enjoyed studying grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I like seeing the way words can work together to create an incredible masterpiece of emotions, beauty, and information.
From elementary through college, I always enjoyed when we studied grammar in class. I remember many of my classmates disliking when we had to diagram sentences—using lines to make a graphic to show how words relate to each other within a sentence. Not me…I actually enjoyed diagramming. It was almost like a puzzle to me, getting each word to fit into its proper place.
As I mentioned above, my knowledge of proper English grammar also helped me succeed in my Greek classes. We even had to diagram sentences in Greek! That was definitely a lot trickier than English! However, my understanding of the various parts of speech (from my grammar classes over the years) really helped me in completing these assignments. Knowing how these parts of speech related to each other within a sentence and how to use their correct forms was instrumental in helping me diagram Greek sentences.
