Finding Joy in the Midst of Chaos

Finding Joy in the Midst of Chaos
August 31, 2021 by Liz Shirey

I usually reserve The Inspired Copy’s blog page for professional content. However, today I just want to share with you something that’s been on my heart. I want to share with you how I find joy in the midst of chaos.

At every seeming twist and turn, our world looks to be in chaos. Hurricanes. Earthquakes. Fires. COVID-19. Political fighting. Division between friends. Anger. Negativity. The devastation in Afghanistan.

Everywhere we look negativity abounds. And I’m not okay with that! I no longer want to just sit by and let the negativity wash over me, attempting to drown me and the ones I love in its vicious undertow.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Every one of these situations breaks my heart! To see us tearing each other down based on a disease, a vaccine, politics, and social mandates is so sad. And I’m not here to share my beliefs on these matters. I have no problem doing so, but this post is not the place for that. Why? Because it would distract from my real message.

And that message is…

Hope and Joy

Regardless of our world’s continuing chaos, I have hope for the future. Not hope that our world will ever be perfect, but hope that there is Someone much greater, stronger, and wiser than anyone on this earth.

My Hope

This Someone is still in control even if it seems like the world is being ripped apart piece by piece. This Someone is the Alpha and the Omega. Our Protector and Defender. The Ultimate Healer. Our dearest Friend and sweetest Comforter. Our unwavering, loving Father. He is the Prince of Peace. He is God Almighty, our Creator and Sustainer!

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

–Psalm 73:26

Our world seems to be spinning out of control. Horrible things are occurring throughout our communities, our country, and our world. Yet…I choose to remember that God is my strength through it all! Just as the psalmist wrote in the verse above, our flesh and our hearts might fail, but God is still God. He sustains us, and He supports us. Ultimately, we are secure in His hands forever.

hope

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore.

–Psalm 125:1-2

God surrounds you! He surrounds me! We cannot be shaken! That is what fills me with HOPE! In fact, it even fills me with JOY!

My Joy

Joy?! You might be asking how could I possibly have joy right now?

It is because I know that this is not the end for me. One day all of these trials and moments of hurt will pass away, and I can spend eternity, rejoicing in heaven with God—my Savior, my Healer, and my Protector. How amazing is that?

So, how do I keep a joyful attitude and outlook on life even when chaos is happening all around me? Each day I chose to focus on the positive instead of allowing my brain to dwell on negative comments or events that are circulating around me.

Filling my mind with worship music and spending time in prayer are both necessary in order to help me maintain my joy regardless of the world’s chaos. “Waymaker” by Leeland is one of my favorite worship songs right now. Here’s just a snippet of its lyrics:

You are
Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper
Light in the darkness, my God
That is who You are

My Challenge

If you already have the hope of Jesus, my question to you is this: are you sharing it with others? If they see your social media posts, read your emails, or listen to your conversations, what do they hear from you? Negativity? Judgment? Fear? Or do they hear hope, joy, and confidence in the One that is bigger than any problem we may face? Speaking and sharing the truth is always important. But are you focused more on sharing truth about events happening in our world or about actually sharing the source of truth—Jesus—with the world?

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

–John 14:6

I challenge you to spend time talking to God and asking the Holy Spirit if you are truly sharing the love, joy, and hope of Jesus with the world. And if not, how can you change your tone or message? Church, it is time for us to rise up and be a beacon of light in this dark, dark world!

light in the dark

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

–Matthew 5:14-16

Let’s move our gaze off our current circumstances and, instead, focus on the hope of our future with God!

My Invitation

If you do not already have this hope for the future, I would love to talk to you! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me to talk. I promise I will not try to sell you anything. This post has nothing to do with The Inspired Copy except that it is a platform from which I can share this incredible hope I have with others. If you do not feel comfortable talking to me, I will connect with you someone else that you would feel more comfortable talking to.

Reach out to me!

If I can leave you all with one last thought, here it is:

The light of God—YOU AND ME—should shine so brightly that the darkness of the world must run in fear! Let us shine our light that all may see!

Great message of hope and reminder about where our focus should be right now – off the world and on Jesus!
